How to Build Professional Relationships During Your Doctoral Experience: Network

Dr. J. White Williams

It is critical to cultivate solid relationships during your doctoral program. Pursuing an advanced degree can be difficult, and having a reliable support system is vital. Connecting with peers, professors, and mentors can offer emotional support and growth opportunities. This blog post will address why creating relationships is essential during your doctoral program and how to make meaningful connections with those around you.

Peers. Use the time in your coursework to take advantage of networking with your peers. An example of an opportunity is with group projects, be active. There is nothing like an assignment where you are to collaborate and there is silence that one member who is silent. You are building your reputation during this time, and you will not want to be the one who is the “silent but want the grade” person.

Professors. Office hours are essential. It is an opportunity to focus on the real issues that may present to you during the coursework. If you are struggling, don’t delay the time to schedule a time to meet with your professor. They are there to help you learn, grow and advance through the program.

Mentors. It’s okay to say you need a little push from outside your university. Whether it is a coach, mentor, or counselor, it is an excellent step to think outside the box and express your concerns while on your academic journey. Sometimes, a peer or professor may not understand or have the time to listen to that personal need. It’s okay to get those nudges as you progress.

Building relationships during your doctoral experience is a necessity. It helps you grow into a very well-rounded and focused person. You can not stand alone in this process; otherwise, you will question your decision even to attain the degree. Remember, this was a goal for you, and completing that goal should remain a priority, especially if you have the talent to contribute to your profession.
