Are you involved in the field of health sciences, either as an instructor or a chairperson?

Dr. J. White Williams

Working with graduate students effectively imparts the use of knowledge and careful attention. The ultimate goal is to help them grow learnedly to become accomplished scholars. It requires a lot of training, wisdom, and thought to meet their needs and enhance their academic progress.

Mentoring doctoral students on their organizational and writing skills brings them the resources needed to write well. For example, a focus on developing their scholarly voice as a writer. And, we work on writing to their target audience, i.e., the experts in their respective fields. Our goal is to help bridge the gap in the research and publish the papers in academic journals.

In my remarks with doctoral candidates, the awareness of feedback is heightened. Feedback is a critical assessment function for preparing students attaining a terminal degree. When we value constructive feedback and clear direction, it helps the candidate reach a pivotal point in their learning.

Not only is it important to listen as a teacher, but we should help our students know we appreciate their efforts in how they are working in this process. And, since we are discussing the health science field, we need good, strong instructors, clear feedback relevant to the research, and a keen sense of how you grow with each student.

Health Science instructors, I come to you to know that we have a responsibility when it comes to our students. Whether playing an instrumental role as a person who helps with research or preparing the student to work in the community, we must intentionally identify our students' skills. During this academic process, we are imparting instruction with constructive feedback because we are training the future as they may help us with our future health journey.
